Defending Masters Champion Rahm Determined to Shine at Augusta Despite LIV Golf Move
It hasn’t been an easy transition for world-renowned golfer Jon Rahm since his high-profile move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league in December. The 29-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked as the world’s number one player, has had to watch several PGA Tour events he once dominated from the sidelines, unable to defend titles he had previously won.
“For everybody who said this would be easy, some things have been, but not being able to defend some titles that mean a lot to me hasn’t,” Rahm acknowledged during a recent video conference with reporters.
However, the one event he will have the chance to defend is the most prestigious of them all – The Masters.
Rahm’s triumph at Augusta National last year marked his second career major championship victory and propelled him back to the top of the world rankings. After a strong start to 2023 with four wins in three months, Rahm’s form has tapered off slightly, leaving him eager to reassert his dominance on the sport’s grandest stages.
The 2023 Masters will present Rahm with his first opportunity to go head-to-head with many of golf’s current elite, including the red-hot Scottie Scheffler, who has ascended to world number one on the back of consecutive wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship. Rahm, known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the game, closely followed Scheffler’s dramatic comeback victory at TPC Sawgrass, marveling at the American’s impressive 20-under-par performance.
“I hope I get to tee it up at The Players again,” Rahm said, lamenting his withdrawal from the event due to illness. “It would be a bit of a sour taste if my last ever start at the Players was (a withdrawal) because I was sick.”
Despite his enthusiasm for the PGA Tour events he will miss, Rahm has expressed contentment with his LIV Golf experience, praising the team format and the unique destinations, such as Hong Kong. However, the Spaniard acknowledged the added significance of major championships, stating, “I think that’s what’s making this Masters and many other majors going to be so much fun, not only for me and for players but for spectators, is for all of us to be able to play together again and showcase what we’re capable of.”
Rahm, much like his Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy, has advocated for a potential union between the LIV Golf and PGA Tour leagues, drawing parallels to the European soccer model that features both national leagues and elite continental competitions.
As he prepares for his Masters title defense, Rahm has revealed details of the Champions Dinner menu, co-created with acclaimed Spanish chef José Andrés, featuring a celebration of his Basque culinary heritage. While his game may not be quite at the same level as last year’s dominant performance, Rahm remains determined to shine on golf’s biggest stage and remind the world of his standing in the sport.
