While 13 of the 89 players in this year’s field hail from the LIV Golf league, including defending champion Jon Rahm, the pathway to the Masters remains limited for those associated with the Saudi-backed tour.
Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley addressed the complex situation during his annual pre-tournament press conference, acknowledging the challenges of establishing a clear entry criteria that encompasses the various golf tours. Ridley emphasized the club’s commitment to assembling the best field possible, although he noted that “we never have had all the best players in the world because of the structure of our tournament.”
The crux of the issue lies in the differential treatment between PGA Tour and LIV Golf players. While the pathway is clear for those on the PGA Tour, it remains more restrictive for LIV participants. With LIV’s league structure not recognized by the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), the majority of its prominent players have seen their rankings plummet, rendering them ineligible for Masters invitations based on that criteria.
Ridley acknowledged the OWGR‘s role as “a legitimate determiner of who the best players in the game are,” a stance that directly opposes LIV‘s format and structure. The Masters Committee has the authority to extend special invitations to international players not otherwise qualified, as evidenced by the inclusion of 25-year-old Joaquin Niemann, who has played in multiple non-LIV events.
