In a thrilling finish, 20-year-old Lottie Woad, a student at Florida State University, emerged victorious at the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur. The young English star birdied the final two holes to secure the championship title.
Heading into the final round, Woad had held the lead, but was soon overtaken by American Bailey Shoemaker, who fired a bogey-free 66. Trailing by one shot on the 17th hole, Woad responded with a crucial birdie to draw level. Demonstrating nerves of steel, she then holed a lengthy putt on the 18th hole to card a round of 69 and secure a three-round total of 8-under par, one shot clear of Shoemaker.
Woad, hailing from Farnham, also birdied the 15th hole, but emphasized that her crucial par save on the 14th hole was equally significant.
“I feel like the three birdies I got were probably not as important as my par save on 14. I think if I had gone three back at that point it would have been pretty difficult,” she told reporters.
The young golfer acknowledged the pressure of the situation, stating,
“Teeing off only having a two-shot lead I knew someone was probably going to overtake me. I was prepared for someone to go low and they did.”
However, Woad remained composed, seizing her opportunities on the closing holes to secure the remarkable victory.
Woad’s triumph at the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur earns her a place in the field for the Women’s Open and the US Women’s Open, a significant milestone in her budding professional career.
“I want to be a professional and be playing in these events. To get this experience so early on will be great for me. I’ve never played in a major before, I’ve played in a couple of pro events but never a LPGA event. It’s going to be really exciting for me,” she expressed.
