Xander Schauffele Matches Major Championship History with Stunning 62 at WGC-Dell Match Play
Xander Schauffele etched his name in the record books once again, equaling the lowest score in men’s major championship history for the second time in 11 months during the opening round of the 2023 WGC-Dell Match Play at Valhalla.
The Olympic champion took full advantage of the ideal conditions, firing nine birdies in a remarkable 62, which matched the mark set by Branden Grace in the 2017 Open Championship and equaled by Rickie Fowler and Schauffele himself in the first round of last year’s U.S. Open.
Impressive First-Round Performance
Starting from the 10th tee, Schauffele wasted no time, making birdies on the 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 18th holes to reach the turn in 31. He continued his stellar play on the front nine, adding further birdies on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th holes. A two-putt birdie on the par-5 7th hole propelled him to a stunning 9-under-par total, breaking the course record of 63 set by Jose Maria Olazabal in 2000.
“It feels great,” said Schauffele. “It’s just day one, but if someone had said I was going to shoot 9-under, I would certainly have taken it. I’ve been playing some really good golf, having a lot of close calls, so me and my team say why not keep chugging along? I’m very happy with the way I played, but I can’t really think much more about it, just got to go and tee it up again tomorrow.”
Schauffele’s impressive opening round performance at the 2023 WGC-Dell Match Play has once again cemented his place among the elite players in the sport, and golf fans eagerly await his continued success throughout the tournament.
