Tommy Fleetwood Faces Masters Challenge Without Caddie for Illness
In a twist at the Masters Tournament, Tommy Fleetwood competes without his ill caddie, Ian Finnis. Discover how he embraces the challenge with temporary caddie Gray Moore while aiming for his first major win.
Fleetwood to Tackle Masters Without Longtime Caddie Finnis
As the world’s top golfers gather at Augusta National for the highly anticipated Masters Tournament, Tommy Fleetwood faces a unique challenge – competing without his trusted caddie Ian Finnis by his side.
Finnis, who has caddied for Fleetwood at every major event over the past eight years, except for the 2018 U.S. Open, is sidelined due to illness. In his stead, Fleetwood will employ the services of former Augusta National caddie master Gray Moore, who has since retired from that role to work as a regular caddie at the club.
“He’s not been well all year,” Fleetwood shared on Wednesday. “At the moment he’s at home trying to recover and get the right treatment… The sooner he can get better, the better for all of us.”
Despite the absence of his longtime partner, Fleetwood remains upbeat about his chances at this week’s BBC golf event, having previously collaborated with Moore during practice rounds at the Masters. The 33-year-old Englishman has flirted with major championship success, recording six top-five finishes, but is still seeking his first major title.
“The first two or three years that I came here, I always had Gray in practice and would always sit and speak to him,” Fleetwood said. “So I’ve known him well for the last few years and I just asked if he could do it this week.”
While Fleetwood admitted that competing without Finnis will feel “very, very different,” he expressed confidence in Moore’s local knowledge and experience at the hallowed grounds of Augusta National. The golfer, who finished tied for 14th at last year’s Masters, will also have the guidance of senior TaylorMade manager Adrian Rietveld, who stepped in as his caddie last week at the Valero Texas Open.
As Fleetwood eyes his maiden major championship triumph, the golf scores and pitch and putt near me enthusiasts will be closely following his progress, eager to witness whether the Englishman can overcome the challenge of navigating the course without his trusted caddie by his side.
