Tiger Woods, the legendary golfer, has insisted that he can still win a sixth green jacket and 16th major title at the upcoming Masters tournament, despite openly discussing the persistent pain he faces on the majority of shots at Augusta National.
Woods, who has played fewer than five-and-a-half competitive rounds since undergoing ankle surgery in April last year, returned to action in the Hero World Challenge in December and completed all 72 holes. However, he was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational in February due to illness after six holes of the second round.
The 48-year-old acknowledged the challenges he faces, stating, “Every shot that’s not on a tee box is a challenge. The ankle doesn’t hurt anymore. It’s fused. It’s not going anywhere. So that’s fine. It’s other parts of my body that now have to take the brunt of it.”
Despite these ongoing issues, Woods remains adamant about his ability to win another green jacket. “If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” he said with a smile, when asked about his potential achievements this week.
The golfer also spoke about the importance of consistency, longevity, and understanding the course at Augusta National, which has undergone numerous changes since his first appearance. “That’s one of the reasons why you see players that are in their 50s and 60s make cuts here, or it’s players in their late 40s have runs at winning the event, just the understanding of how to play it,” Woods explained.
Furthermore, Woods discussed his continued discussions about becoming the Ryder Cup captain in 2025 and shared his belief that Rory McIlroy will eventually complete the career grand slam by winning the Masters.
As golf enthusiasts eagerly await the start of the Masters, Tiger Woods’ unwavering confidence and his ability to adapt to the ever-changing challenges of Augusta National will undoubtedly be a key focus of the tournament.
