Golf’s Return to the Olympics and the Unsung Heroes: Caddies

Golf fans eagerly awaited the return of the sport to the Olympic stage, as it made its comeback at the 2016 Rio Games after a prolonged absence. The coveted competition saw Great Britain’s Justin Rose clinching the gold medal, reigniting discussions around whether caddies should also be recognized for their instrumental role in their golfer’s success.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, American golfer Xander Schauffele emerged victorious, and he took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards his caddy, Austin Kaiser. Recognizing that caddies do not receive Olympic medals, Schauffele and his family gifted Kaiser a special golden ring adorned with the US flag and the iconic Olympic rings, symbolizing the significance of their partnership.

“They knew it meant a lot to me, too,” Kaiser shared with the Associated Press, reflecting on the heartfelt gesture.

The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s “Order of Ikkos” program, introduced in 2009, allows medallists to acknowledge the contributions of their support team by presenting them with a commemorative medallion.

Matt Kuchar’s caddy, John Wood, was visibly moved when he received such a medallion after the American golfer’s bronze medal finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Similarly, Austin Kaiser expressed an overwhelming sense of emotion in response to Schauffele’s kind gesture, highlighting the deep bond between golfers and their caddies.

While caddies play a vital role in their golfer’s performance, they are currently not eligible for Olympic medals. The discussion around whether this policy should be revised continues, as the sport’s return to the Summer Games has underscored the significant impact caddies have on their golfers’ success.
