Defending Champion Scheffler Secures Historic Victory at the Players Championship
In a thrilling final round at the 2023 Players Championship, Scottie Scheffler became the first player in the tournament’s 50-year history to successfully defend his title. The world number one carded a flawless closing 64 to finish the event at 20-under par, edging out a star-studded field that included US Open champion Wyndham Clark, Open champion Brian Harman, and Xander Schauffele.
Scheffler, who also won the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week, showcased his remarkable resilience and skill, overcoming a five-shot deficit to claim the prestigious trophy once again. His round included an eagle and six birdies, with a crucial hole-out from 92 yards on the fourth hole propelling his charge.
“It’s pretty special,” an elated Scheffler told CBS. “It’s something you don’t really get the opportunity to do very often. It’s tough enough to win one Players, so to have it back-to-back is extremely special, and I’m really thankful.”
The final-day drama unfolded as Schauffele, the overnight leader, faltered with dropped shots on the 14th and 15th holes, allowing Scheffler to capitalize and take the lead. Clark, who also finished runner-up to Scheffler at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, mounted a late surge with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, but his birdie attempt on the 18th agonizingly lipped out, denying him a spot in a potential playoff.
“I don’t know how that putt doesn’t go in,” a disappointed Clark lamented. “It was kind of right centre with like a foot to go, and I knew it was going to keep breaking, but it had speed and I thought it was going to go inside left, and even when it kind of lipped, I thought it would lip in. I’m pretty gutted it didn’t go in.”
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick carded a closing 69 to finish fifth on 16-under par, while Rory McIlroy had to settle for a share of 19th place following a final-round 72, despite making a tournament record 26 birdies during the week.
The victory cements Scheffler’s status as one of the game’s elite players, and his ability to defend his title in such impressive fashion at the prestigious Players Championship further solidifies his position as a golfing force to be reckoned with.
