World number one Scottie Scheffler left no doubt about his golfing prowess, securing his second Masters title in just three years. The 26-year-old carded a closing round of 68 at Augusta National to finish four shots ahead of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, cementing his status as one of the game’s elite players.
Scheffler’s victory marks his third triumph in his last four events, with a runner-up finish rounding out his impressive recent run of form.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, the American’s thoughts immediately turned to his personal life, as he expressed his eagerness to return home to his pregnant wife, Meredith. “I’m coming home; I’ll be home as quick as I can,” Scheffler said.
“I wish I could soak this in a little bit more, but all I can think about is getting home. It’s a very, very special time for both of us.”
The reigning world number one also acknowledged the impending shift in his priorities, noting that golf will soon take a backseat to the upcoming birth of his first child. However, Scheffler made it clear that he has no plans to take his eye off the ball, vowing to continue challenging for golf’s biggest titles.
“I definitely will enjoy the birth of my first child, and my priorities will change very soon, so golf will be fourth in line, but I still love competing,” Scheffler said. “I don’t plan on taking my eye off the ball any time soon.”
Scheffler’s triumph was highlighted by a brilliantly judged approach shot on the ninth hole, which set up the second of three consecutive birdies. The world number one’s impressive statistics over the past year, as noted by top analyst Justin Ray, further underscored his dominance in the sport.
With the Masters now in the rearview, the golfing world’s attention turns to the 106th U.S. PGA Championship, which will take place at Valhalla Golf Club from May 16-19. Scheffler will undoubtedly be among the favorites as he looks to add to his growing collection of major titles.
