Golf Enthusiast Rory McIlroy Reflects on Roller-Coaster Opening Round at The Masters
Augusta, GA – April 7, 2023 (Associated Press) – Rory McIlroy endured a mix of emotions following his one-under-par 71 on the challenging first day of the 2023 Masters Tournament.
The Northern Irishman, who is making his 10th attempt to secure the elusive career Grand Slam, carded four birdies and three bogeys in his lowest opening round at Augusta National since 2018. Though he finished the day five strokes behind playing partner Scottie Scheffler and six adrift of clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau, McIlroy remained upbeat about his performance.
“It’s satisfying in one sense because it’s a decent start compared to the way I’ve played here recently, but I felt like it could have been two or three better,”
the 33-year-old shared. After a slow start, he was pleased to make a few birdies around the turn but lamented some missed opportunities coming in, including a short putt on the 16th hole and a bogey on the 17th.
Despite the minor setbacks, McIlroy is confident he is still very much in the hunt. “I’m definitely not out of the tournament and not chasing anything tomorrow,” he said. “I’m playing with Scottie so can keep an eye on what he’s doing, and I’m looking forward to getting back out there.”
The four-time major champion acknowledged the consistency demonstrated by Scheffler, who has a knack for posting bogey-free rounds, as the key to winning major championships. “If you look at Scottie compared to the rest of the field, the amount of bogey-free rounds he shoots is phenomenal, and that’s the secret to winning major championships,” McIlroy observed.
As he prepares for the second round, the seasoned golfer remains optimistic about his chances of finally donning the coveted green jacket and completing the career Grand Slam. With plenty of golf still to be played, the stage is set for an intriguing weekend at the 2023 Masters.
