Rory McIlroy’s peers may be inching closer, but none could match his prowess on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship. The four-time major champion turned a potential duel with Xander Schauffele into a commanding 5-stroke victory, carding a final-round 65 to finish the week at 17-under par.
McIlroy, who secured his second consecutive win after teaming up with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic, now sets his sights on the upcoming PGA Championship at Valhalla – the site of his 2014 major triumph. “It feels like the stars are aligning a little bit, but I’ve got a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat next week,” the Northern Irishman told CBS.
Starting the day one shot behind Schauffele, McIlroy quickly erased the deficit with a birdie on the 1st hole. After Schauffele’s eagle on the 7th, McIlroy seized control with a blistering stretch – birdies on 8 and 9, followed by a dramatic eagle on the 10th hole. Schauffele’s challenge unraveled with back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 14, leaving McIlroy comfortably ahead.
“These people have sort of watched me grow up, from winning here as a 20-year-old to being the ripe old age of 35 now, they’ve seen my progression throughout my career,” he remarked, acknowledging the unwavering support from the Charlotte faithful.
The highlight of McIlroy’s dominant display came on the 15th, where he holed out from a greenside bunker for an eagle, essentially sealing the victory. McIlroy’s comprehensive victory underscores his current form, as he heads to the PGA Championship as perhaps the closest thing to a co-favorite alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. With his game firing on all cylinders, the Northern Irishman will look to end his decade-long major drought and defend his 2014 PGA title at Valhalla.
