Rory McIlroy, the renowned golf champion, has chosen to maintain a resolute focus on his upcoming performance at the WGC-Dell Match Play event, despite the recent news of his divorce filing. The Northern Irishman, who last won a major title in 2014, is determined to channel his recent superb form into a long-awaited fifth major victory.
McIlroy, who filed for divorce from his wife Erica on the eve of the 2023 US PGA Championship, has declined to comment extensively on the personal matter, emphasizing the desire to keep the proceedings “as respectful and amicable as possible.” The four-time major winner, who won the last of his majors at Valhalla in 2014, is steadfast in his commitment to the game, expressing his readiness to compete at this week’s event.
“I’m ready to play this week,” McIlroy stated briefly when asked about how he was feeling personally, as the media in attendance were reminded to respect his wishes and limit their questions to a 10-minute window.
Despite the personal turmoil, McIlroy remains confident in his recent form, having secured victories at the Zurich Classic and last week’s Wells Fargo Championship. He acknowledged the familiarity he has with the Quail Hollow course, where he has enjoyed considerable success in the past, and expressed his eagerness to maintain the momentum heading into the WGC-Dell Match Play.
“Some of the shots that I hit last week, some of the three-quarter shots, some of the wedge shots, some of the iron shots, combined with how good I feel with the driver at the minute, that obviously gives me a lot of confidence,” McIlroy said.
However, the golf world has witnessed a recent trend of American players dominating the PGA Championship, with the last eight editions of the event being won by home favorites. McIlroy, who was the last European player to triumph at the PGA in 2014, acknowledged the challenge posed by the American-style golf courses typically used for the championship.
“If you think of quintessential American golf, I think golf courses that we go to for the PGA Championship are usually somewhat like these,” McIlroy said. “It’s the same thing. I think G-Mac (Graeme McDowell) in 2010 was the first European player to win the US Open since Jacklin in 1970. These things are cyclical.”
