Renowned golf performance coach Jon Adler believes Rory McIlroy’s recent major disappointment at the U.S. Open can fuel a strong challenge at next month’s Open Championship. The Northern Irishman narrowly missed out on his first major title in a decade, as costly late-stage putting miscues allowed Bryson DeChambeau to snatch victory at Pinehurst.
“From adversity often comes a new strength. It’s from the setbacks that often the great players emerge, and I think Rory’s shown he’s got that in his locker,” Adler said.
The golf performance expert drew parallels to McIlroy’s previous major heartbreak, when he famously faltered at the 2011 Masters as a young golfer, only to win the very next major. Adler is confident the 34-year-old will similarly use this latest disappointment as motivation to triumph at Royal Troon from July 18-21.
“I remember when Rory crashed and burned at the Masters years ago, when he was young. He won the next major after that,” Adler noted. “It’s going to be a bitter pill for him to swallow for a while, but he’s shown he can bounce back before. I’d have a little bet on him for the Open.”
While six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo believes the U.S. Open collapse could “haunt” McIlroy, Adler remains optimistic the setback will ultimately strengthen the golf star’s mental resilience.
“The fear is almost like a bully. Once you’ve been punched on the nose the next time you’re not quite as scared. You’re like, ‘Well, I’ve had the worst. I’ve dealt with the worst that can happen to me,'” Adler explained.
As McIlroy sets his sights on the upcoming Open Championship, Adler emphasized the importance of the Northern Irishman’s ability to “let go” of the U.S. Open disappointment and “trust” himself to capitalize on the “opportunity” presented at Royal Troon. With his proven track record of bouncing back from previous major heartbreaks, golf enthusiasts will eagerly await McIlroy’s quest for a fifth major title next month.
