In a surprising turn of events, world-renowned golfer Rory McIlroy has hinted at the possibility of joining the contentious LIV Golf league, a move that would have seemed unthinkable just months ago.

The four-time major champion, known for his staunch opposition to the Saudi-backed venture, has softened his stance in recent months as several of his Ryder Cup teammates, including Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton, have made the switch.

During a pre-tournament press conference ahead of the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, McIlroy did not completely dismiss the idea of joining LIV Golf, stating, “Somewhere in the middle maybe. Who knows?” The Northern Irishman’s former agent, Chubby Chandler, had earlier claimed that there was a 10% chance of McIlroy making the jump.

McIlroy’s comments come on the heels of a mixed start to his 2024 campaign. While he finished second at the Dubai Invitational and claimed a record fourth victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, he struggled at the rain-disrupted AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, finishing tied for 66th and 24th, respectively.

Despite the setbacks, the 34-year-old remains confident in the state of his game, expressing, “I feel like my game is in pretty good shape.” As for his definition of a successful season, McIlroy emphasized the importance of wins, season-long titles, and major championships, acknowledging that he will be “judged on those tournaments a lot.

The golfing world will undoubtedly keep a close eye on McIlroy’s next move, as the player’s potential switch to LIV Golf would undoubtedly send shockwaves through the sport.
