Then I tried to hit my tee shot on 12 and that’s when I could barely get the club back. I did what I could to kind of stay in the tournament today and hopefully it’ll loosen up, and then I’ll be able to make somewhat normal swings tomorrow.”
Undeterred by the physical ailment, the resilient Texan fought through the pain, demonstrating the tenacity that has made him one of the game’s dominant forces. Scheffler remarked, “The way I was getting around the course, the way my neck was feeling, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to continue playing, so yeah, good fight out there.”
Meanwhile, Wyndham Clark continued his impressive performance, carding a second consecutive 65 to reach 14-under par and take a commanding five-shot lead over England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, the reigning U.S. Open champion. Clark attributed his success to solid iron play, timely putting, and a strong mental game.
Fitzpatrick, who held the outright lead at one point, stumbled late in the round, finding the water with his approach on the 13th hole and incurring a double bogey. However, the Englishman remained optimistic about his chances, stating, “Anything can happen over the weekend, there’s still two days, so you never know. Another couple of six-under rounds over the weekend and you never know what can happen.”
