In her pursuit of one of the LPGA Tour’s major titles, world No. 1 Nelly Korda is cementing her status as the best golfer on the planet not named Scottie Scheffler. The 24-year-old American finished the first round of the Chevron Championship, one of the LPGA’s five major tournaments, at 4-under par, just two shots off the lead held by Lauren Coughlin.
Korda’s remarkable run of form has captured the attention of golf fans and the wider sports public alike. The young phenom has won an astonishing four consecutive LPGA events, putting her on the cusp of tying the tour’s record for most consecutive victories.
“Korda’s streak puts her next to some legendary names in the women’s game,” explained The Athletic’s golf writer Gabby Herzig. “She just became the first player to win four straight starts since Lorena Ochoa in 2008, and an American player hasn’t accomplished this feat in 46 years, since Nancy Lopez‘s five-win stretch in 1978.”
With the opportunity to match the records held by the likes of Lopez and Annika Sorenstam this weekend, Herzig is bullish on Korda’s chances. “I have faith that she’ll pull off her fifth win this week,” Herzig said. “Korda has proven she can win under a variety of circumstances. She’s simply levels above everyone else right now.”
Should Korda triumph again at the Chevron Championship, she would head to the JM Eagle LA Championship with the chance to make history by clinching six consecutive LPGA victories. While Herzig believes this would be a stretch, the golf world continues to marvel at the young American’s remarkable display of dominance.
