Golf Superstar Nelly Korda Defies Expectations, Takes Command at 2024 AIG Women’s Open

St Andrews, Scotland – As the reigning world No. 1, Nelly Korda has grown accustomed to the heavy expectations that come with her elite status. However, a recent slump had fueled criticism that she struggles in more arduous conditions, a characterization Korda is now working to disprove at the 2024 AIG Women’s Open.

After consecutive 4-under 68s to start the tournament at the challenging Old Course in St Andrews, Korda has jumped out to a commanding three-shot lead over her nearest rivals, Lilia Vu and Charley Hull. Unfazed by the sideways rain and howling gusts, the 26-year-old American put on a ball-striking clinic, hitting every fairway and green in regulation during her flawless second round.

“This year I’ve won on just so many different types of grasses in different types of conditions that you just kind of always have to adapt,” Korda said. “That’s the same thing in tennis, same thing in life. You’re always adapting to your situations at hand, and I think that’s what’s so fun about links golf – you’re literally starting it 30 yards left of your target.”

While Korda missed several makeable birdie opportunities, she showcased her putting prowess by draining a 20-foot birdie on the treacherous Road Hole (17th) and another testing putt on the 18th to cap off her impressive round. In contrast, playing partner Charley Hull struggled with her putter, three-putting on three occasions to fall five shots behind Korda.

With her commanding position, Korda is poised to silence the critics who have labeled her a “dome golfer” – a player who thrives in ideal conditions but falters in more demanding environments. Her ability to adapt and conquer the unique challenges of links golf has placed her in prime position to capture her second major championship of the season.

As the tournament heads into the weekend, all eyes will be on Nelly Korda as she seeks to cement her status as the dominant force in women’s golf.
