Aspiring Golfer Shipley Savors Masters Experience, Plays Alongside Tiger Woods

April 10, 2023 – In a week that will undoubtedly transform his golfing career, 23-year-old Ohio State graduate student Neal Shipley made the most of his Masters debut, including the rare opportunity to play alongside the legendary Tiger Woods on Sunday.

Shipley, the lone amateur to make the cut, impressed with an admirable 76 in the second round’s brutally difficult conditions, securing his spot in the esteemed Butler Cabin on Sunday night. This coveted invitation meant Shipley would sit with the eventual Masters champion and be honored on national television – a moment he will cherish forever.

Yet, the young golfer’s biggest thrill of the week came when he was paired with Tiger Woods for the final round.

“Playing with Tiger, Sunday at the Masters, the whole week, I think I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week,” Shipley remarked after his final round 73.

Despite the daunting task of going head-to-head with the 15-time major winner, Shipley more than held his own. He made four birdies en route to a 1-over round, finishing four shots better than Woods’ 77. Shipley also enjoyed the unique experience of the crowds’ electric energy and Woods’ calming presence throughout the round.

“He’s such a normal guy and really cool,” Shipley said of his legendary playing partner. “He was great to me all day. Couldn’t be more appreciative of him just being awesome today, and it was just really cool to be around him and just the attention he gets and the roars. The crowds were phenomenal.”

This Masters debut marks a significant milestone in Shipley’s burgeoning career. The former James Madison golfer transferred to Ohio State as a graduate student in 2022 and has steadily climbed the ranks, earning a U.S. Amateur runner-up finish last summer and securing his place at the 2023 U.S. Open.

While Shipley’s ultimate goal is to hoist a major championship trophy, this week’s experience at Augusta National has undoubtedly left an indelible mark. As he reflects on the opportunity to compete alongside one of golf’s all-time greats, Shipley knows that his journey is only just beginning.
