Masters First Round Sees Bryson DeChambeau Soar, Scottie Scheffler Lurking Close Behind

Bryson DeChambeau carved out an impressive opening round at the Masters, firing a blistering 7-under 65 to seize an early lead on Thursday. The 30-year-old American, who has long struggled to tame Augusta National, showcased an inspired performance, making seven birdies against just a single bogey.
DeChambeau’s incendiary start included birdies on three of his opening holes, and he maintained his momentum throughout the day, carding further gains on the 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes. His stellar iron play and putting were key, as he hit 15 greens in regulation and required just 27 putts to complete his round.
Close on DeChambeau’s heels is the defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, who fired a 6-under 66 to sit one shot back. Scheffler, who has been in scintillating form of late, capitalized on favorable wind conditions and deft course management from his experienced caddie, Ted Scott.
“I felt like today I just did a really good job of — (caddie Ted Scott), I would say, did a really good job of kind of guessing the wind correctly,” Scheffler remarked.
The morning wave was delayed by 2.5 hours due to heavy overnight rain, but conditions eventually improved, allowing for low scoring. Nicolai Højgaard occupies solo third at 5-under through 15 holes, while Max Homa is tied for fourth at 4-under with five holes remaining in his opening round.
- 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett made a surprising return to form, carding a 4-under 68 in his first tournament round since undergoing shoulder surgery in September 2023.
“It’s completely unexpected. Sometimes that happens, whatever. You make a couple of birdies and your mind starts thinking, all right, I can do it,” Willett said.
With the delayed start, 27 players were unable to complete their rounds on Thursday and will return early on Friday to wrap up the first round before embarking on their second.
