In a thrilling finale at the historic Old Course in St Andrews, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko triumphed at the AIG Women’s Open, adding the prestigious title to her recent Olympic gold medal.
Ko, who had been tied for fourth heading into the final round, delivered a flawless performance, carding three birdies in her first 14 holes to surge into contention. The intense final-round battle came down to Ko, world No. 1 Nelly Korda, and Lilia Vu, all knotted at 6-under par.
“It’s pretty surreal,” the emotional champion remarked during the trophy presentation. “Winning the gold medal in Paris a couple of weeks ago, it was almost too good to be true. And now, to be holding this trophy, I can’t believe it.”
With the trophy on the line, Ko seized the moment, draining a brilliant birdie putt on the 18th hole to take the clubhouse lead. Defending champion Vu had a chance to force a playoff, but a costly bogey on the final hole secured the victory for Ko.
Ko’s triumph caps off a remarkable fortnight, as she navigated the challenging conditions at the renowned Old Course.
“I think I just had a lot of fun, and it was almost so windy that I hit some shots and all I could do was laugh,” she said. “It was difficult, but the team here did an incredible job to make the course playable.”
Vu’s runner-up finish saw her tie with Jiyai Shin, Ruoning Yin, and Korda, who faltered late with a bogey on the 17th hole. England’s Charley Hull finished tied for 20th, while compatriot Lottie Woad claimed the Smyth Salver as the leading amateur.
