Grit and Skill Shine Through in Thrilling Comeback Victory
On Saturday, Lottie Woad, a 20-year-old sophomore at Florida State University, emerged victorious at the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur, showcasing her remarkable grit and skill on the course’s famed finishing holes.
Woad, hailing from Farnham, England, began the final round in the lead but faced a stiff challenge from Bailey Shoemaker, who had stormed up the leaderboard with a blistering performance. However, Woad refused to be deterred, birdying the 15th, 17th, and 18th holes to finish at 8-under, edging out Shoemaker by a single stroke.
Woad’s composure was on full display as she calmly drained a long birdie putt on the 18th hole, a remarkable feat that capped off her thrilling comeback.
The young golfer’s final round of 3-under 69 showcased her ability to remain focused and execute her game plan, even when the pressure was mounting.
Disciplined Approach Key to Victory
Throughout the day, Woad kept a close eye on the manual scoreboards, monitoring her competitors’ progress and ensuring she stayed on track to claim the coveted ANWA title. Her disciplined approach to her iron play, particularly around Augusta’s undulating greens, allowed her to consistently avoid trouble and position herself for success.
Woad’s triumph was all the more impressive given the unique format of the ANWA, which includes a Friday practice round at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in the middle of the competition. Sleeping on the lead for two nights, the Englishwoman demonstrated her mental fortitude and ability to execute her game plan under the bright lights.
A Memorable Finish
Woad’s victory will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the tournament’s most thrilling finishes, as her late surge matched Shoemaker’s own impressive charge up the leaderboard. The humble yet fiery competitor couldn’t contain her joy as she celebrated the moment her winning putt dropped on the 18th green.
