Lexi Thompson Sizzles with 68 to Take Lead at Women’s PGA Championship

In a thrilling opening round of the Women’s PGA Championship at the Sahalee Country Club in Washington state, Lexi Thompson fired a sizzling four-under-par 68 to take a one-shot lead.

The veteran golfer, who recently announced her retirement from full-time LPGA Tour play at the end of the season, made three consecutive birdies to start her round and added three more to edge out Nelly Korda and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit, who sit one shot back.

“I don’t think that has to do with announcing what I did. It’s just a matter of being comfortable out there, playing free-swing Lexi I guess. Just enjoying being out there every step of the way.”

Charley Hull, Ireland’s Leona Maguire, and England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff are among the players a shot further behind, with Georgia Hall and Bronte Law also in the mix. Notably, Yuka Saso, the reigning U.S. Open champion, struggled with four consecutive bogeys on the back nine to finish the day at 74.

Korda, who missed the cut in her last two events after a dominant stretch of six wins in seven starts, remains optimistic about her chances.

“I’ve seen a lot of first-hand rollercoasters happen in people’s careers. I just know that if you stay positive and in your own bubble, you can bounce back. You work hard, you know what you got inside of you, and you just got to go out and execute it.”

Charley Hull, who battled stomach cramps and waited for her clubs to arrive in the build-up to the tournament, managed to shoot a solid round, saying, “I didn’t feel the best, but I woke up this morning and felt fine and played all right, so there you go.”

As the tournament progresses, golf enthusiasts eagerly await to see how the leaderboard unfolds and whether Lexi Thompson can maintain her lead or if her fellow competitors will rise to the challenge.
