Golf Sensation Spieth Clinches Second Consecutive Major at 2015 US Open
On this day in 2015, American golfer Jordan Spieth secured his second consecutive major championship victory, winning the 115th US Open at Chambers Bay. The world number two carded a closing round of 69 to finish the tournament at five-under-par, edging out Louis Oosthuizen and Dustin Johnson by a single shot.
Spieth’s triumph saw him become just the sixth player in history to win the Masters and US Open in the same year, joining an elite group that includes Craig Wood, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. He was also the first player since Gene Sarazen in 1922 to win multiple majors at the age of 21 or younger.
After a shaky start with a three-putt on the opening hole, Spieth bounced back with birdies on the 8th and 12th holes. As his closest challenger, Dustin Johnson, faltered with three bogeys in four holes from the 10th, Spieth found himself in a share of the lead with playing partner Branden Grace.
“The pivotal moment came on the 16th hole, where Grace’s drive went out of bounds, leading to a double bogey. Spieth, meanwhile, holed a 25-foot birdie putt to take a commanding lead. However, he then made a double bogey on the 17th, setting up a tense finish.”
Oosthuizen had earlier set the clubhouse target at four-under-par, thanks to a remarkable back nine of 29, tying the US Open record. Johnson then birdied the 17th to draw level with Spieth, but the young American held his nerve, two-putting the 18th hole for a closing birdie to secure the title by a single shot.
Spieth went on to finish as the runner-up at the 2015 US PGA Championship and later secured a third major title at the 2017 Open Championship.
