Golfing Veteran Graeme McDowell Suspended by LIV Golf for Anti-Doping Violation

Veteran Golfer Faces One-Tournament Ban and $125,000 Fine

Graeme McDowell, a former U.S. Open champion, has been suspended by the LIV Golf league for violating their anti-doping policy. The Northern Irishman will miss the upcoming LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament, starting on August 16th, as a result of the infringement that occurred during the inaugural LIV Golf event in Nashville in June.

According to the LIV Golf statement, McDowell has been handed a one-tournament ban and fined $125,000 after using a decongestant medication that contained a banned substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine). Consequently, McDowell’s and his team’s results from the LIV Golf Nashville event have been disqualified, with prize money and points retroactively adjusted.

In response, the 45-year-old acknowledged his mistake, explaining that he had used an over-the-counter decongestant to manage severe congestion issues without realizing it was on the league’s prohibited list. McDowell emphasized the importance of verifying all medications as a professional golfer and expressed deep regret over the oversight, stating he fully accepts the sanctions imposed by LIV Golf.

This suspension marks a setback for McDowell, who will now miss the upcoming LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament as a result of the anti-doping policy violation.
