As the opening round of the prestigious WGC-Dell Match Play tournament at Austin Country Club continued on Friday, golf fans were captivated by the prospect of Tiger Woods completing a remarkable comeback.
The 15-time major champion, who was among the 27 players unable to finish their first rounds on Thursday due to inclement weather, managed to card a one-under-par 13 holes, leaving him six shots behind the pace set by former U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau.
Meanwhile, pre-tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler, who entered the week with an impressive form of 1-1-2, continued his strong play, carding a flawless 66 to sit just one shot behind DeChambeau. Scheffler, however, faced a unique challenge off the course, with his wife Meredith expected to go into labor with their first child during the tournament.
Despite the impending arrival, the world No. 1 remained focused on the task at hand, stating,
“The nursery is not quite ready, and we’ve had some issues at our house the last few weeks. I think that’s the exciting part. I think we are definitely underprepared to be parents.”
As the first round concluded on Friday, the hardest hole on the course proved to be the 11th, while the par-five eighth played downwind and yielded several low scores.
The second round is set to commence at 8 a.m. local time, with slightly cooler and less humid conditions expected throughout the day, accompanied by persistent winds.
