Golf Scores Impacted by Wet Weather at Cognizant Classic
On the final day of the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, inclement weather disrupted the tournament’s conclusion. Play was suspended with 26 players, including Ireland’s Shane Lowry, still on the course.
Lowry, who had shared the lead after the third round with American Austin Eckroat and England’s David Skinns, finished five holes on Sunday before the severe weather forced officials to halt proceedings. Lowry carded one bogey, dropping him to a tie for fourth place, three strokes off the pace.
“I was hoping to finish strong, but the weather had other plans,” said Lowry.
Eckroat took advantage of the weather delay, recording two birdies in his first seven holes to claim sole possession of the lead. Meanwhile, Skinns dropped two shots in his five holes, leaving him tied for eighth place.
South African Erik van Rooyen fired an impressive nine birdies through 18 holes, finishing one shot behind Eckroat. American Jake Knapp sits in third place, two shots off the lead, after completing 15 holes.
The inclement conditions, which included a lightning strike near the course, led to a three-hour delay and ultimately the suspension of play for the day. Tournament organizers have rescheduled the conclusion of the Cognizant Classic for Monday, as they prioritize the safety of players and spectators.
