Charley Hull Leads AIG Women’s Open After Impressive First-Round Performance
Charley Hull’s bid to improve upon her runner-up finish at last year’s AIG Women’s Open got off to a fantastic start, as the English golfer carded a five-under 67 to take the lead after the opening round at the Old Course in St. Andrews.
The 28-year-old from Kettering, who was a runner-up at Walton Heath 12 months ago, defied the chilly and gusty conditions to surge to the top of the leaderboard, finishing with a birdie on the final hole.
“I would take that 100 per cent,” said a delighted Hull, who completed her round just before 7:30 pm on Thursday. “I’m happy with that score, and I’m just looking forward to going out tomorrow and being patient again.”
Despite a wayward start that saw her hit just three greens in regulation through the first eight holes, Hull gradually found her rhythm, carding a birdie on the ninth to make the turn at one-under. A strong back nine, featuring four more birdies, including the decisive one on the 18th, propelled Hull into a one-shot advantage over world number one Nelly Korda and China’s Ruoning Yin.
Competing in the marquee group alongside Korda and defending champion Lilia Vu, Hull displayed her resilience in the challenging conditions, which she described as “the windiest I’ve ever played in.” The English golfer even resorted to wearing sunglasses to shield her eyes from the gusts, despite the overcast conditions.
With a host of notable names, including Georgia Hall (71) and amateur Lottie Woad (72), struggling in the blustery weather, Hull’s opening-round masterclass has set her up nicely in her pursuit of a maiden major title, having finished as a runner-up on three previous occasions.
