Anna Davis, the reigning Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion, faced a one-stroke penalty for slow play during the second round of the 2024 edition of the prestigious event. The rules violation moved the young golf prodigy from 3 over par to 4 over, ultimately resulting in her missing the 36-hole cut and the opportunity to compete in the final round at Augusta National.
The infraction occurred on Thursday at Champions Retreat Golf Club, where the first two rounds of the ANWA are played. Tournament officials had warned Davis and her playing partners, including the current 36-hole leader Lottie Woad, multiple times that they were falling behind the designated pace of play.
According to the tournament’s policy, golfers are allotted 40 seconds to execute a stroke, with an additional 10 seconds granted to the first player in the group. Davis received her first bad time on the fifth hole and a second on the 17th, leading to the one-stroke penalty being applied on the 17th hole.
“This is not the first time Davis has encountered rules issues at the ANWA. During the 2023 championship, she was assessed a 4-shot penalty for incorrectly utilizing the lift, clean, and place rule while playing from the rough on her opening hole.”
The Auburn University freshman appeared visibly distraught as she made her way to the parking lot with her father, declining immediate media requests but hinting that she may speak to reporters later.
The 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur continues to captivate golf enthusiasts, with the remaining competitors vying for the coveted title at the historic course on Saturday.
