Golf Enthusiast’s Dream Comes True: Amy Yang Clinches Historic KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
Golf enthusiast, the wait is over! Amy Yang, the experienced South Korean pro, has clinched her first major championship title at the prestigious KPMG Women’s PGA Championship held at the tree-lined Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.
On Sunday, the 34-year-old Yang showcased her exceptional skills, routing the field with rounds of 70, 68, 71, and 72 to claim a three-stroke victory. Despite a few hiccups in the final three holes, including a double-bogey on the par-3 17th, Yang maintained a comfortable lead to seal the deal with a tap-in par on the 18th.
“I always wanted to win a major and I came close several times, and I started doubting myself, if I was ever going to win a major before I retire,” an elated Yang told NBC after her triumph. “I’m so grateful and very, very happy to win a major.”
Yang’s victory comes on the heels of her top-five finishes at the 2023 Chevron Championship and Women’s Open Championship, as well as her triumph at the CME Group Tour Championship last year. However, she had a rough start to the 2024 season, missing the cut in three of her last four starts before finding her groove at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Finishing in a tie for second place at 4-under-par were Jin Young Ko, Miyu Yamashita, and Lilia Vu, all seeking their first LPGA title. Ally Ewing and Lauren Hartlage rounded out the top five at 3-under-par.
Lexi Thompson, the first-round leader after an opening 68, finished in a tie for ninth at 1-under-par, despite a stunning turnaround on the back nine.
With this win, Yang has not only claimed her maiden major championship but has also clinched a spot representing the Republic of Korea at the upcoming Olympics. It’s a well-deserved triumph for the veteran golfer, who has consistently been a force to be reckoned with on the LPGA Tour.
