However, a costly double-bogey on the par-five 14th hole put her back into a tie with fellow contenders Jenny Shin, Lilia Vu, and eventual champion Lydia Ko.
“Listen, it’s golf. I’m going to mess up and unfortunately I messed up over the weekend twice in two penalising ways coming down the stretch,” a disappointed Korda admitted to reporters. Despite her solid play and strong putting throughout the week, the American was unable to capitalize on her advantage, ultimately finishing two shots behind Ko.
For the New Zealander, this victory marked her first major title in eight years and her third overall, cementing her status as one of the game’s brightest stars. Ko’s triumph came just weeks after she won gold at the Paris Olympics, completing a truly remarkable Cinderella-like run.
“It’s pretty surreal. Winning the gold medal in Paris a couple of weeks ago, it was almost too good to be true. I said to myself, ‘how is it possible for me to win the AIG Women’s Open?’ I’ve had the most Cinderella-like story the past few weeks,” the 12th-ranked Ko expressed with disbelief.
Despite the heartbreak, Korda’s impressive performance at the AIG Women’s Open has earned her the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award, given to the player with the best record across all five majors during the LPGA Tour season. The world number one will undoubtedly be hungry to bounce back and add to her growing list of accolades in the months ahead.
