Golf fans were captivated by Jordan Spieth’s gutsy performance at the RBC Heritage, as the former world No. 1 narrowly avoided withdrawing from the tournament due to a recurring wrist injury.
During the opening round on Thursday, Spieth “jammed” his left wrist into a greenside bunker bulkhead, causing his ECU (extensor carpi ulnaris) tendon to pop out. Spieth told PGATOUR.COM, “It’s a thing that’s recurring,” acknowledging the ongoing ulnar nerve issue that has plagued him since last year.
“It’s one of those things, like it’s not affecting speed, anything like that. It’s just– managing it.”
Spieth initially thought his tournament was over, but the tendon quickly slippedpped back into place, allowing him to finish the round at 1-under 70. The 29-year-old received treatment between rounds and had his wrist taped up before his Friday tee time, determined to push through the discomfort.
Despite the injury scare, Spieth showcased his resilience, carding a 4-under 67 to climb to 5-under for the tournament, tied for 23rd heading into the weekend.
Spieth plans to keep his wrist taped up through the remainder of the RBC Heritage, acknowledging the importance of ensuring the tendon stays in place.
“I may as well keep doing it… I’ll do it the rest of the week, I’m sure, just to be sure.”
The three-time major champion’s ability to overcome adversity and remain competitive has once again proven to be a testament to his grit and determination on the golf course. As Spieth continues to manage the lingering wrist issue, golf enthusiasts eagerly await his pursuit of further success in the weeks and months ahead.
