Rory McIlroy’s bid for a coveted career grand slam took a disappointing turn on day two of the prestigious Masters tournament. The Northern Irishman’s birdie-free second round of 77 was marred by an excruciating pace of play, taking a staggering six hours and two minutes to complete alongside fellow competitors Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one ranked player.
McIlroy, who slumped to a score of four over par, lamented the challenging conditions and the glacial tempo of the round. “Tough day, really tough day,” he remarked. “Just hard to make a score and just sort of trying to make as many pars as possible.”
The 33-year-old expressed particular frustration with the 11th hole, noting that it “felt like it took an hour to play.”
Despite the setback, McIlroy remains hopeful of staging a comeback, drawing inspiration from his previous come-from-behind victory at the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year. “I won from 10 back [at halfway] in Dubai at the start of the year, but obviously the Dubai Desert Classic and the Masters are two very different golf tournaments,” he said. “We’ll see. Hopefully the conditions are a little better tomorrow. Yeah, I still think I can go out tomorrow and shoot a low one, get back into red numbers, and have half a chance going into Sunday.”
At the halfway stage, Scheffler’s second-round 72 saw him share the lead at six under par with Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau, providing an intriguing leaderboard for golf enthusiasts to follow as the tournament progresses.
