In his highly anticipated return to major championship golf, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods has made a solid start to the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National. Despite challenging wind conditions that saw play suspended due to darkness, Woods carded a 1-under-par 71 through 13 holes in the opening round.
Woods, playing in his first tournament since the Genesis Invitational in February, opened his round in impressive fashion, birdieing the first hole – only the second time in his illustrious career he has accomplished that feat in the Masters’ opening round. A bogey on the 4th was swiftly followed by a birdie on the par-5 8th, putting the golfing icon at 1-under-par for his round.
Navigating the treacherous Amen Corner with aplomb, Woods recorded pars on the 11th and 12th holes, showcasing his renowned scrambling ability. A two-putt par on the 13th hole ensured Woods would conclude his opening round in red figures, sitting T17 on the leaderboard.
“The wind was all over the place,” Woods remarked after his round. “It was one of the most tricky days that I’ve ever been a part of…”
Woods, who missed the cut at last year’s Masters due to a flare-up of plantar fasciitis in his right leg, will resume his first round on Friday morning before teeing off for his second round. The 48-year-old is searching for his 16th major championship victory, which would extend his own record and cement his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of all time.
- While Woods sits six strokes behind the early leader, Bryson DeChambeau, who carded a stunning 7-under-par 65, the opening-round performance will undoubtedly provide a much-needed boost of confidence as he continues his quest for a sixth green jacket at the iconic Augusta National.
