Golf Superstar Rory McIlroy Sees Positives in Heartbreaking US Open Loss
Northern Irish golf sensation Rory McIlroy believes he will emerge stronger from his agonizing defeat at the 2023 US Open in Pinehurst. The four-time major champion admitted that while the final day was “tough,” he took away valuable lessons that will propel him forward.
“I did things on that Sunday that I haven’t been able to do the last couple of years,” McIlroy reflected. “I took control of the golf tournament, held putts when I needed to – well, mostly – and made birdies to really get myself in there.”
Despite the disappointment, the 34-year-old recognized the merits of his performance. “As you get further away from it happening, you start to see the positives and all the good things you did throughout the week,” he said.
McIlroy, who won his first major title at the 2011 US Open just two months after a meltdown at the Masters, acknowledged the valuable lessons he learned from the Pinehurst experience. “I can vividly remember starting to feel a little uncomfortable waiting for my second putt on 16, and the putt on the last was a really tricky one,” he explained.
Aware of his competitor Bryson DeChambeau’s position off the tee, McIlroy made the strategic decision to play his final putt cautiously. “If the one back didn’t matter, I would have hit it firmer,” he said. “Knowing that Bryson had hit it left off the tee, I just sort of wanted to make sure that if there was still a chance at a play-off, that it was at least going to be that.”
Reflecting on the final day, the Northern Irishman summed it up succinctly: “The way I’d describe Pinehurst on Sunday was it was a great day until it wasn’t.”
