Golf Enthusiasts Captivated by Tight Leaderboard at Women’s PGA Championship
Washington – The 2023 Women’s PGA Championship has taken an exciting turn, with Sarah Schmelzel and Amy Yang sharing the halfway lead after impressive performances on the Sahalee Country Club course.
Amidst the fierce competition, world number one Nelly Korda’s struggles have been a talking point. Korda, who had been in fine form with six wins in her previous seven starts, failed to make the cut after carding an 81 in the second round. The American had a difficult start, opening with four straight bogeys, and managed to secure only one birdie on the 18th hole, missing the cut by a single stroke.
“No words for how I’m playing right now,” Korda said. “I’m just going to go home and try to reset. A lot went my way at the beginning part of the year, and just giving it back.”
On the other hand, Schmelzel and Yang have seized the opportunity, putting together impressive rounds to share the lead. Schmelzel, an American without a win in six years on the LPGA Tour, carded six birdies in a five-under-par 67, while Yang, a South Korean player, fired a bogey-free 68.
“I kind of caught a glimpse of the leaderboard on 17 and saw I was right around the lead,” Schmelzel said. “It was just nice to be able to finish that well, too, knowing I was around the lead in a major.”
Lexi Thompson recovered from an early double bogey, making three birdies in her final round of 72, leaving her two strokes back alongside South Korea’s Jin Young Ko and Japan’s Hinako Shibuno.
Leona Maguire of Ireland carded a 71 to sit in a group three strokes off the lead, while Charley Hull of England is a further two shots back after a 73.
The tight leaderboard and the unexpected performances have added to the excitement surrounding the 2023 Women’s PGA Championship, keeping golf enthusiasts captivated as the tournament progresses.
