Adam Scott’s quest to extend his remarkable run of major championship appearances hit a roadblock, as the veteran Australian golfer suffered a playoff defeat in a U.S. Open qualifier in Springfield, Ohio. Despite the setback, Scott remains hopeful that his alternate status may still grant him a spot in the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 from June 13-16.
Scott’s 36-hole qualifier was a grueling affair, ultimately ending in a playoff against compatriot Cam Davis for the fourth and final qualifying spot. After both players carded impressive scores to force extra holes, it was Davis who prevailed, hitting his approach shot to within 2 feet and sinking the winning birdie putt.
The result was a bittersweet one for Scott, who has played in every major championship since the 2001 British Open, maintaining the longest active streak in the game. The USGA has held back six spots for potential late qualifiers through the world rankings, offering Scott a glimmer of hope to make it to Pinehurst.
