Golf Superstar Lexi Thompson to Retire in 2024 After 18 Iconic U.S. Women’s Open Appearances
Lexi Thompson, the renowned professional golfer, has announced her plans to retire from full-time competitive golf at the conclusion of the 2024 LPGA season. The 29-year-old, who is set to compete in her 18th U.S. Women’s Open this week, has carved an impressive career, including a major championship victory and 11 LPGA Tour titles.
Thompson, who burst onto the women’s golf scene as the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open at just 12 years old, turned professional at the age of 15 and won her first event on Tour at 16, setting yet another record.
“I’m just a lot more refreshed. I’m in a better mindset, more relaxed, just happier to be out here. Not saying that I wasn’t before, but just refreshed.”
Despite experiencing both highs and lows throughout her illustrious career, Thompson remains one of the most recognizable figures in the sport. Her triumph at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship (now the Chevron Championship) and her heartbreaking final-round collapse at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open have cemented her legacy as a true golfing icon.
Thompson, who nearly lost her LPGA Tour card in 2023 due to a lingering wrist injury, has made just two cuts this season, including a T3 finish at the Ford Championship. However, she bounced back with a strong performance at the 2023 Solheim Cup, which she hopes will propel her to a successful final two seasons on the LPGA Tour.
