Emerging golf talent Neal Shipley capped off a dream performance at the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play tournament, securing the low amateur honors. The Ohio State graduate student navigated the challenging Augusta National course with poise, making the cut as the sole amateur to do so this year.

Shipley’s week was filled with unforgettable moments, from staying in the iconic crow’s nest on Monday night to witnessing the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. However, the true highlight came on Sunday when he was paired with none other than golfing legend Tiger Woods for the final round.

“When I saw Tiger on the range, it was like, oh my gosh, this is actually happening,” Shipley recounted, his excitement palpable. The 25-year age gap between the two players did little to dampen their camaraderie, as they chatted about the game, Woods’ son Charlie, and their shared passion for the sport.

Despite some frustration on the back nine during the third round, Shipley bounced back with a solid final-round 73, showcasing his mettle and resilience. As the low amateur finisher, he will be presented with the prestigious Silver Cup, a testament to his exceptional performance at the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play.

Looking Ahead

Shipley will shift his focus to the upcoming Big Ten Championships at the legendary Scioto Country Club, where golfing great Jack Nicklaus honed his skills. Additionally, as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, Shipley has secured a spot in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst later this summer, providing him with another opportunity to prove his prowess on the national stage.

Reflecting on his captivating journey at the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play, Shipley shared, “Knowing my game can compete out here and I don’t need to do anything special to make cuts” as his greatest takeaway from the experience.
