It has been nearly 50 years since a Masters rookie has slipped on the coveted Green Jacket, with Fuzzy Zoeller’s playoff victory in 1979 being the last time a debutant emerged victorious. However, Clark and Aberg are no ordinary first-time participants.
At age 30, Clark currently sits at a formidable fourth in the world rankings and boasts the impressive achievement of a U.S. Open title. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Aberg, ranked ninth globally, has already secured wins on both the PGA and DP Tours, and was a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup squad in 2022.
“It’s a tricky balance,” acknowledged Aberg, who finished as the runner-up to Clark at the recent Pebble Beach event. “I’m feeling all the first-time feelings, but I’m also trying to be okay with all those things coming at me at the same time. I’ll definitely make sure that, come Thursday, I’ll be as prepared as I can.”
The significance of experience at Augusta National cannot be overstated, as five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods emphasized.
“It’s an understanding of how to play this golf course,” he explained. “That’s one of the reasons why you see players in their 50s and 60s make cuts here or it’s players in their late 40s having runs at winning the event, just the understanding of how to play it.”
Nevertheless, Clark remains confident in his abilities, having already triumphed at the U.S. Open.
“I know it’s a tall task,” he said. “It’s a challenging golf course. There’s a bunch of good golfers. But that would be an amazing accomplishment and I like my chances. I really like myself on this golf course.”
With their impressive resumes and unwavering belief, Clark and Aberg present a formidable challenge to the seasoned Masters veterans, setting the stage for a potentially historic week at Augusta National.
