On the Eve of Augusta: Top Amateur Golfers Prepare for the Prestigious ANWA
As the prestigious 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) approaches, the world’s top female amateur golfers are buzzing with anticipation. Among them is Amari Avery, the 20th-ranked amateur, who is frantically searching for the perfect outfit to wear to the event’s formal dinner at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club.
The ANWA, now in its fifth year, has firmly established itself as the pinnacle of women’s amateur golf. Brainchild of Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley, the tournament provides a unique platform for 72 of the globe’s best non-professional female golfers, aged 16 to 24, to compete on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National just days before the Masters.
“What makes this event ten times more special is that we’re playing at a golf course where women were never allowed to (be members),” said the 20-year-old Avery, who is preparing for her fourth ANWA appearance. With the club only admitting its first female members in 2012, the tournament represents a significant milestone in women’s golf.
The action kicks off on Wednesday, April 3, with the first two rounds taking place at Champions Retreat, before the surviving 30 players (plus ties) advance to the final round at Augusta National on Saturday, April 6. Reigning champion Rose Zhang, who turned professional shortly after her dramatic playoff victory in 2023, will not be in the field, but a talented group of amateurs, including world No. 1 Ingrid Lindblad and 15-year-old prodigy Asterisk Talley, are ready to etch their names in ANWA history.
As the players prepare to take on the iconic Augusta layout, the anticipation is palpable. “I remember thinking to myself, Tiger hit this shot here … or Jordan Spieth ended up here,” Avery reflected. “But then I started to think, well, what am I going to make of my time here? How can I make my mark?”
Viewers can catch the action live, with the first two rounds airing on Golf Channel and anwagolf.com, and the thrilling final round broadcast on NBC on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 3 p.m. ET.
