2024 Solheim Cup: European Captain Suzann Pettersen Names Vice-Captains

The 2024 Solheim Cup is shaping up to be an exciting event, as European Captain Suzann Pettersen has unveiled her backroom team for the prestigious golf tournament. Pettersen has named four accomplished vice-captains, including England’s Mel Reid, who joins the experienced group that led Europe to a thrilling 14-14 tie against the United States in last year’s clash in Andalusia.

The European squad will feature a familiar face in Dame Laura Davies, along with Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Norway’s Caroline Martens, all of whom were part of the successful 2023 Solheim Cup setup. Reid, a six-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, previously served as a vice-captain in 2019 and made four appearances as a player for Europe, earning an impressive seven-and-a-half points.

Pettersen, who was the architect of Europe’s triumph last year, is thrilled with the team she has assembled for the upcoming contest. “With just over six months to go until the competition, I am thrilled to be able to name my backroom team for the 2024 Solheim Cup,” she said. “After last year’s success, why change a winning team? I am excited to be able to have the same team by my side, but also with the great addition of Mel.”

The European captain praised Reid’s passion and experience, stating, “She has the experience both from her time as a player and also being a vice-captain during the 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles. She is all over this task and we’re excited for her to join us.”

Reid, who is eager to contribute to Europe’s cause, expressed her enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. “Everyone knows how much the Solheim Cup means to me and how much I love being part of it and Team Europe. It brings out passion and shows the best of what golf has to offer,” she said. “Being a vice-captain back in 2019 gave me a different perspective and it made me hungrier to be on the Solheim Cup team in 2021. It was what I needed at the time, and it was a huge honour to do that.”

The 2024 Solheim Cup will be held at the prestigious Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, from September 13 to 15. Golf enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the event, as Europe looks to defend its title and continue its dominance in the biennial team competition.
