The ANWA, brainchild of Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley, has been a game-changer for women’s amateur golf. Kicking off on the Wednesday before Masters week, the three-day championship provides a unique platform for these talented young athletes to compete on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National, just days before the men’s Masters Tournament.
Last year, the event delivered a thrilling finale, as Stanford’s Rose Zhang, arguably the most accomplished female amateur golfer of all time, emerged victorious in a sudden-death playoff against Georgia native Jenny Bae. Zhang’s gritty performance not only launched her into a sophomore spring victory lap at Stanford but also set the stage for the historic beginnings of her burgeoning LPGA career.
As the 2024 tournament approaches, all eyes will be on the world’s No. 1 amateur, LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad, as she seeks redemption after missing the cut in 2023.
