Heartbreak for MacIntyre at 2023 WGC Dell Match Play
In a nail-biting turn of events at the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre saw his chances of claiming a maiden major title take a significant hit. The Ryder Cup star was just three strokes off the lead when he encountered a challenging situation on the par-five seventh hole, his 16th of the day.
MacIntyre’s second shot had landed in a concession area, prompting the need for a ruling. However, the process of obtaining a second opinion on the appropriate drop location proved to be a lengthy one, taking nearly 25 minutes. By the time the issue was resolved, the daylight had faded, and the left-hander found himself struggling to regain his momentum.
“Took them 25 minutes to get a ruling and I’ve come out from the ruling and it’s pitch black. It’s just really annoyed me. To finish the way I finished is really not good when I’m right in the golf tournament,” MacIntyre lamented after his round of 69.
The extended delay appeared to take a toll, as MacIntyre went on to drop shots on the eighth and ninth holes, ultimately finishing five strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele. “I was in a great position. I’m still in a decent position. But I’ve just given two shots to the field. I was in a good spot there, and yeah, just sore to finish the way I finished,” the Scotsman said.
Despite the setback, MacIntyre remains within striking distance, determined to bounce back and contend for his first major championship title in the final round of the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play.
