2023 Open Championship Promises Record Crowds and Golf Excitement

The upcoming 2023 Open Championship at Royal Troon is set to attract a record-breaking attendance of 250,000 spectators, marking a significant increase from the 2016 edition. The R&A, the governing body of golf, has confirmed the surge in ticket sales, with the championship scheduled to take place from July 18-21.

The news comes amid speculation around the potential presence of Greg Norman, the former professional golfer and current CEO of the controversial LIV Golf league. Norman, who has twice won the Claret Jug and narrowly missed out on a playoff victory at Troon in 1989, recently attended the Masters Tournament after apparently purchasing a ticket through the secondary market.

However, the R&A has stated that it is unaware of any plans by Norman to be among the record crowds at Royal Troon. The association’s director of corporate communications, Mike Woodcock, revealed that his name does not appear on the list of attendees so far, though he acknowledged the possibility of the former champion acquiring a ticket through the resale platform or hospitality packages.

The significant increase in anticipated attendance, from 173,000 in 2016 to 250,000 this year, reflects the growing popularity and excitement surrounding the 150th edition of the prestigious championship. The R&A has undertaken extensive work to ensure the golf course can accommodate the influx of spectators, including:
