Golf Enthusiasts Eagerly Await Royal Troon’s Hosting of the 2023 Open Championship
Royal Troon, the iconic Scottish links course, is set to host the prestigious Open Championship for the 10th time from July 18-21, 2023. The course, which boasts a rich history of staging golf’s oldest major, will welcome the world’s top players as they compete for the coveted Claret Jug.
The most recent winner at the Ayrshire venue was Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who captivated the golfing world with his epic duel against Phil Mickelson in the 2016 edition. Stenson’s closing 63, which matched the lowest score in a men’s major, saw him triumph with a 20-under-par total, equaling the mark set by Jason Day in the 2015 US PGA Championship.
Royal Troon’s Memorable Moments
Royal Troon has witnessed numerous memorable moments throughout its history of hosting the Open Championship. In 1989, Mark Calcavecchia emerged victorious in the first play-off since 1975, overcoming Greg Norman’s early charge to claim the title. A decade later, in 1999, it was the turn of another unlikely winner, as Todd Hamilton followed in the footsteps of Ben Curtis to lift the Claret Jug.
The course has also been the stage for some of golf’s all-time greats. Tom Watson cemented his status as a Scottish fan favorite in 1982, winning his fourth Open title on a fourth different Scottish links. The legendary Arnold Palmer, who had already won the Masters and US Open that year, also made a successful title defense at Troon in 1962, securing a six-shot victory over Kel Nagle.
