Augusta, GA – April 7, 2023 – The second round of the 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club was marked by Mother Nature’s unrelenting fury, as intense winds and challenging conditions tested the world’s elite golfers. Despite the daunting elements, a trio of American stars emerged atop the leaderboard, setting the stage for an enthralling weekend of golf.
The elite field averaged a staggering 75.08 on Friday, the highest second-round score at the Masters since 2007. The increase of 1.65 strokes over the opening round was the biggest jump from Round 1 to 2 at the Masters since 1976. Approach shots proved particularly treacherous, with the field hitting 7% fewer greens in regulation and the average proximity to the hole jumping up more than 4 feet.
Amid the carnage, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler managed a second-round 72 to maintain a share of the lead. The 27-year-old has been a model of consistency, appearing in the top 10 following play in 30 major championship rounds since 2021 – seven more than any other player. Scheffler’s short game was once again outstanding, as he gained over a shot and a half in strokes gained around the green.
Joining Scheffler atop the leaderboard are Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa, both seeking their first green jacket. DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open champion, overcame a challenging day to card a second-round 73, while Homa continued his impressive Masters debut with a 71. Homa has been particularly sharp on the front nine, where he is 6-under par through two rounds.

The veteran duo of Vijay Singh (61) and José María Olazábal (58) also made the cut, marking the third time since 2000 that two players age 58 or older have done so at the Masters. Meanwhile, several high-profile names, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Dustin Johnson, found themselves on the wrong side of the cut line after struggling to tame the gusting winds.
